Mistral AI is a Paris-based frontier AI lab building open-weight and proprietary language models, best known in Europe as the sovereign alternative to the US labs. A Samsung-led €3B round in September 2026 valued it at more than €21B, a year after ASML led its previous round. It says an IPO is possible but not imminent.

What Mistral does.
Mistral AI was founded in Paris in 2023 by Arthur Mensch, formerly of Google DeepMind, and Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, formerly of Meta. It releases many of its models with open weights, so companies can download, run and modify them on their own systems, alongside proprietary models, the Le Chat assistant and enterprise deployments.
Its pitch is sovereignty: European governments and companies that do not want to depend on US labs or send data abroad can run Mistral's models in Europe or on their own hardware. That has made it the best-funded AI lab in Europe.
Funding.
ASML, the Dutch chip-equipment maker, led a €1.7 billion round in September 2025, investing €1.3 billion at an €11.7 billion valuation. A year later, on September 8, 2026, Samsung led a €3 billion Series D that valued Mistral at more than €21 billion, with ASML, BlackRock-managed funds and the Luxembourg state among the investors. Mistral's finance chief called it the largest equity round ever completed by a European tech company, and said annual recurring revenue was slightly above $1 billion.
IPO prospects and exposure.
Mistral says there is nothing imminent on an IPO but wants the flexibility to list quickly if its board decides to. Until then, the listed companies with the largest stakes are ASML and Samsung, both far larger businesses for which Mistral is a small strategic holding. Nvidia and Microsoft hold smaller investments.
Can you invest in Mistral AI?
Mistral AI is currently private. There is no public stock ticker or exchange listing, so retail investors cannot buy its shares through a normal broker. The realistic options are:
- Wait for the IPO. If Mistral AI files an S-1 and lists on a major exchange, shares will become available to all investors through any broker with access to that exchange. IPO timing is not confirmed, we track its status on this page.
- Indirect exposure. Some investors gain indirect exposure through listed companies that invest in or partner with Mistral AI. This is not the same as owning Mistral AI equity.
