What Scale AI does.
Scale AI was founded in 2016 by Alexandr Wang and Lucy Guo. It started by labeling data for self-driving cars and became one of the main suppliers of the training data, human feedback and evaluations that AI labs use to improve their models. It also sells AI systems to the US government, including the Defense Department.
The Meta deal.
In June 2025 Meta invested about $14.3 billion for a 49% stake without voting rights, implying a valuation of about $29 billion, and hired Wang to help lead its new superintelligence lab. Jason Droege, Scale's chief strategy officer, became chief executive. Because Meta is a rival to its other customers, several large labs reportedly cut back their work with Scale afterwards, and the company laid off part of its staff in July 2025.
IPO prospects and exposure.
With Meta owning nearly half the company, an IPO is less likely than it once looked, and none has been announced. Meta is the listed company with by far the largest stake, though Scale is a very small part of Meta's business. Amazon was an earlier, smaller investor.
