What Perplexity does.
Perplexity runs an answer engine: instead of a list of links, it answers a question in prose and cites the pages it used. It was founded in 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, formerly a researcher at OpenAI, and others. In July 2025 it launched Comet, a web browser with an AI assistant built in, and made it free for everyone that October.
It earns money from paid subscriptions, enterprise plans and API access, and competes directly with Google Search, ChatGPT and other AI assistants for the same queries.

Perplexity's valuation climbed quickly: $9 billion in December 2024, then several rounds in 2025 that took it to $20 billion by September 2025, by which point it had raised about $1.5 billion in total. Nvidia and Jeff Bezos are among its early backers.
Risks and IPO prospects.
Perplexity faces copyright suits from publishers over how it uses their content, and it competes with Google and OpenAI, which have far larger user bases and their own models. It has not announced IPO plans. The listed company with the most direct link is Nvidia, a small investor for which Perplexity is a negligible part of the business.
Can you invest in Perplexity AI?
Perplexity AI is currently private. There is no public stock ticker or exchange listing, so retail investors cannot buy its shares through a normal broker. The realistic options are:
- Wait for the IPO. If Perplexity AI files an S-1 and lists on a major exchange, shares will become available to all investors through any broker with access to that exchange. IPO timing is not confirmed, we track its status on this page.
- Indirect exposure. Some investors gain indirect exposure through listed companies that invest in or partner with Perplexity AI. This is not the same as owning Perplexity AI equity.
