What OpenAI does.
OpenAI makes ChatGPT and the GPT models behind it. It earns money from consumer subscriptions, from ChatGPT and agent platforms sold to companies, from developers using its API, and since February 2026 from ads shown to free users. Its finance chief said in August 2026 that enterprise revenue had overtaken consumer revenue.
Funding and the road to an IPO.
OpenAI closed a $122 billion round at an $852 billion valuation in March 2026, the largest private financing on record, and confidentially filed a draft S-1 on June 8, 2026. In September 2026 Sam Altman said it would not go public this year, citing concerns about AI safety, so 2027 is the likeliest window. The company is controlled by the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation, which owns about 26% and appoints the board.
